Safety Note: Improper Installation Is a Leading Cause of House Fires
Improper wood stove installation — inadequate clearances to combustibles, incorrect stove pipe, an undersized or unlined flue — is one of the leading causes of residential house fires in the United States. Clearance and venting requirements are not suggestions; they are minimum safety standards derived from stove testing and fire investigation data. GEM follows manufacturer installation specifications and applicable codes on every installation, and documents the completed work in a written inspection report.
Wood Stove Installation
A wood stove installation involves more than setting the stove in place. Every installation must meet minimum clearance requirements to combustibles — walls, floors, and ceilings — which vary by stove model and are specified in the manufacturer's installation manual. A non-combustible hearth pad is required under the stove and in front of the door opening. The stove connects to the flue through single-wall or double-wall stove pipe, which must maintain proper clearances to combustibles throughout its run. The flue itself must be either a properly sized masonry chimney with a stainless steel liner or a Class A (double-wall insulated) chimney pipe system. GEM handles the full installation — stove placement, hearth pad verification, stove pipe connection, and liner sizing and installation — and provides a written inspection report documenting the completed installation.
Wood Stove Flue Cleaning
Wood stoves and their flues accumulate creosote faster than open fireplaces. The reason is burn behavior: wood stoves are designed to burn slowly and at lower temperatures to extend burn time and heat output. Slower, cooler burns produce more creosote — the tar-like byproduct of incomplete combustion that coats the inside of the flue. Stage 1 creosote (flaky, dry deposits) is relatively easy to brush out. Stage 2 and Stage 3 creosote (tar-like or glazed) requires chemical treatment and is a serious fire hazard. Annual cleaning is the minimum for a regularly used wood stove. GEM cleans the stove pipe, the connector, and the full flue length, and documents the condition in a written report.

Wood Stove Repairs
Door Gasket Replacement
The rope gasket that seals the stove door is a wear item. A failed gasket allows air to bypass the air controls, causing uncontrolled burns and excessive creosote buildup. We replace door gaskets on most stove brands.
Firebrick Replacement
The firebrick lining the interior of the firebox protects the steel or cast iron body from direct flame contact. Cracked or missing firebrick must be replaced to prevent damage to the stove body.
Baffle Repair and Replacement
The baffle plate above the firebox directs combustion gases for a secondary burn, improving efficiency. Warped or cracked baffles reduce efficiency and increase creosote production.
Damper Issues
A stove damper that sticks open or closed affects draft control and burn efficiency. We diagnose and repair or replace damper assemblies.
Draft Problems
Smoking stoves, backdrafting, and poor draw are often caused by an undersized or improperly configured flue, negative air pressure in the home, or a blocked chimney. We diagnose the cause and recommend the correct fix.
